BBH in Shanghai had an idea for Nestea that needed ice to be realistically sculptured into text and a speech bubble shape. Rather than trying to make and shoot real ice they approached me to create the whole thing in 3d.
I went back to my earlier ice shaders for V-ray and modified it to achieve this effect. These where required for large format outdoor billboards and thus had to be extremely high resolution. Although the mesh itself is already of quite high resolution, the shader still uses a bit of displacement (see the close-up) and it took a lot of tweaking to get acceptable render times for the large format. Still, I’m quite happy with the results.
